Here we are using a string to find where the old roof meets the roof of this gable end we are adding. It gives us a point in the valley, at the top of the plywood, between the new and old roof. The small block that is holding the string is the same thickness as the new roof plywood that will be used. That's a thickness of about 19/32 (just under 5/8) inches.
