Course Scope

Second of the three-semester introductory physics sequence for undergraduate students in physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Includes waves, electricity, magnetism, and optics. There are separate Lecture, Lab, and Recitation meetings for the course.

Stuff to Buy

You can get the student access kit bundled with the text book from the Virginia Tech University Bookstore $126.80 or you can get it separately on-line at http://www.masteringphysics.com/ for $36.0. Of course you can shop around for the text book.

Prerequisites

Passing Grade in MATH 1205, 1206 and PHYS 2305, or equivalent

Course Grade

Homework 20%
Lab 15%
Recitation Quizzes 10%
Exam I and II 30%
Final Exam 25%

Exams will cover material from the reading, lecture, homework assignments, and lab assignments. If an exam is missed because of a prior excused absence, the remaining exam and final exam will each carry more weight.

Your final course grade will be based on a combination of your ranking relative to the other class members, and on your absolute score. The absolute scores will strongly influence the fraction of A's and B's (and so on) in the class.

Lecture

The lectures supplement your assigned reading and vice versa. Read the assigned reading prior to the discussion of that topic in lecture. You will be required to know all the material in the readings, even if it is not covered in the lecture. Think of it like a literature class. You can't go to class without reading the text before it, otherwise you'll be lost.

Recitation

Use your recitation meetings to discuss homework, concepts, and additional problems, as well as taking and going over quizzes, and going over exams.

Lab

The laboratory periods are designed to apply the theoretical concepts presented in the lectures and recitations to actual situations. This time allows you to develop good observation, data-taking, and data-interpretation skills. This component of the course is very important, and the consequences of not completing all of the experiments are severe. YOUR FINAL COURSE GRADE WILL BE DROPPED BY ONE-THIRD OF A LETTER GRADE FOR EVERY 2 LABS NOT SATISFACTORILY COMPLETED. For example: if two labs are missing a B+ would become a B; if four labs are missing a B+ would become a B-. Complete information about the laboratory procedures and policies, laboratory schedules, and contact information can be found at the laboratory website, http://www.phys.vt.edu/~labs/phys2306/summer05A/.

Homework Assignments

Mastering Physics On-Line Course Assignments will be used for completing your homework. In addition there will be homework handed in on paper at the start (and not after) of some lectures, which will be listed on the Mastering Physics web site along with the on-line homework assignments. The MasteringPhysics Course ID is PHYS23062005SUM1. Use your last name than first for your MasteringPhysics ID. If you know in advance that you will be absent from a lecture--because of a previously scheduled commitment, for example--you should turn in your homework assignment earlier or have a classmate turn it in for you. This is your responsibility. Late "paper" homework will not be accepted.

Exams

You are required to bring a student ID to the exams. Exams will be closed book (and no notes, computers, PDAs, etc.).

Quizzes

There will be a quiz given in every recitation class. There are no make-up quizzes. The two lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

Course Request Numbers (CRNs) and Meeting Times

You must be registered for two CRN's: one Lecture/Recitation and one Lab.

CRN Type Days Time Room

Honor Code

The honor code pertains to all aspects of this course. You are encouraged to work with others in studying the material and discussing homework and other course related problems, but all work (exams, quizzes, homework, and reports) turned in under your name must be your own work.
